Sep 09, 2017 A 0.020 deep cut in 12L14 steel resulted in chatter and it took a long time, experimentation and frustration to figure out how a tool cuts. Now I can triple that 0.020 deep cut in 12L14 mild steel with my Square Tool and have no chatter on a Sherline lathe the only thing that changed is the geometry of the tool.

Oct 18, 2009 The essence of lathe tool grinding, as I think of it, is to undercut the tip of the tool to provide relief so that the metal just below the cutting tip does not contact the work. This concentrates enough cutting force on the tip to cut into the metal of the workpiece.
Aug 15, 2011 The bench grinder is the most commonly recommended tool for grinding lathe tools. This machine tends to cut slow, cut hot and cut facets. It may work in more experienced hands but for the new guy maybe not the best tool to learn on. A far better option for grinding lathe tools is a simple belt sander, preferably one that uses 2 wide belts.
Jun 14, 2021 Lathe Tool Post Grinding Wheels Source. I recently purchased a used Dumore tool post grinder and it came with no grinding wheels. The wheels need to be approximately 1-12 to 2 dia x 14 thick x 14 dia hole arbor. Dumore and McMaster-Carr sell them. Oct 03, 2011 This is the last article in Mikeys series about grinding lathe tool bits. In part 1 he discussed his experiences with grinding bits, why he uses a belt sander instead of a bench grinder and introduced some terminology about tool bit shapes and angles. In part 2 he covered tip geometry and tool shapes in more depth. Here he describes the actual process of grinding a tool bit.

Feb 20, 2017 Using the 60-grit wheel, grind the long edge first. Hold it flat against the tool rest which, remember, is at a 10 downward angle and slide it smoothly back and forth across the entire wheel. When it gets hot enough to burn your fingers, dunk it in the water and continue. The more dead the nerves in your fingers are, the faster this will go.

Begin by dressing the grinding wheel. Next, look up the typical angles for the workpiece material, and then follow the steps in Figure A2. Dip the tool in coolant frequently to keep it from overheating and annealing. Any discoloration on the bit indicates it may no longer be hardened. If this happens, consider starting over again from the beginning.
Feb 20, 2011 A grinding wheel is the main tool used for sharpening lathe tools. You need to dress the grinding wheel. This essentially refers to a process of preparing the grinding wheel. This is because the grinding wheel develops a small build-up that can affect its performance, i.e. its sharpening capability.
Jan 01, 2019 Alternative Grinding Approaches Besides the wheel grinders, several other systems can be used to sharpen lathe tools. NMWT member Dan Shipman recently demonstrated a belt sander adaptation using sanding belts on the sanders platen as the grinding surface. Another tool, the WorkSharp, uses rotating sanding disks for grinding tools.
Jun 29, 2020 Grinding, or abrasive machining, once performed on conventional milling machines, lathes and shapers, are now performed on various types of grinding machines. Grinding machines have advanced in design, construction, rigidity and application far more in the last decade than any other standard machine tool in the manufacturing industry.
